Besides fishing, the people of ancient Dubai busied themselves in other occupations like rearing cattle, pearl trading, growing dates, etc.

As you know, the fact that the British Imperialists protected Dubai did not deter the developments it made in trade and commerce. More and more merchants were now getting attracted towards the city.
Towards the beginning of the 20th century a fourth of the total population were foreigners. Inhabitants flowed in from Baluchistan, India, Persia, Kuwait, South Arabia and Bahrain. The British put up an agency for politics in Dubai in the year 1954.
The British freed Dubai from its shackles in the year 1971 and you can understand that this became a landmark in Dubai history. Soon after this Dubai joined the other 5 emirates namely Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Fajairah, Aiman and Umm Al Quwain to form the UAE. Ras Al Khaimah was the seventh emirate to later join the existing emirates.
Oil was discovered in 1966. In the year 1969 Dubai sent its first export of oil. As you know, ever since then there has been no looking back. Dubai history records a consistent development in this field. The development in the production of oil not just contributed vastly to the income of Dubai but also helped it develop it infrastructure in terms of its economy and society like hospitals, schools, tourism and other provisions that characterize a developed society.
You may know the fact that the former ruler of Dubai, H H Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, had a great contribution towards this end. The present ruling emir of Dubai H H Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum or Sheikh Mohammed for short has been maintaining the same effort.
